What’s next for the ‘Lost Generation’ of academics?

In academia, the ‘lost generation’ refers to mid-career scientists and researchers that, after completing many short-term contracts and temporary positions, find themselves largely excluded from research careers due to lack of opportunities for permanent positions. This cohort often also experience difficulties in exploring career paths in other sectors in society, causing suffering and an enormous loss of human talent and financial resources. What are the main factors behind this issue, and how do we solve it?
